NFL Week 2 expert predictions, picks for Denver Broncos vs Indianapolis Colts: 'Daniel Jones will be seeing ghosts'

The Indianapolis Colts host the Denver Broncos in NFL Week 2 action, both teams coming off opening victories. Indianapolis dominated the Miami Dolphins in Week 1, while the Broncos had a difficult time beating the Tennessee Titans.

Few of these national experts believe Colts quarterback Daniel Jones can duplicate his Week 1 efficiency (22-of-29, 272 yards, 1 touchdown, 2 TDs rushing) against the NFL-leading Denver defense, and Broncos QB Bo Nix is expected to produce more than he did against the Titans (25-of-40, 176 yards, 1 TD, 2 interceptions).

Predictions for NFL Week 2: Indianapolis Colts vs Denver Broncos Are the Colts favored over the Broncos on Sept. 14?

Joel A. Erickson, IndyStar: Broncos 27-21

“Indianapolis surprised everybody with a thorough beatdown of Miami in the opener, but Denver looks like a team that is headed in the opposite direction of the Dolphins, and there are still plenty of questions about this Colts team.”

Pete Prisco, CBS Sports: Colts 24-23

“Denver is out on the road for the first time against a Colts team that dominated the Dolphins last week. Daniel Jones played well in that game. But this is a much tougher challenge in the Denver defense. Bo Nix wasn’t great last week, so he needs to get back on track. I think the Colts will find a way to win this one late.”

Mike Florio, Pro Football Talk: Colts 23-20

“It’s entirely possible that the Colts are for real.”

Frank Schwab, Yahoo: Broncos cover the spread and win

“The Colts looked incredible last week. But that was against the Dolphins, who have what might be the worst defense in the NFL. Denver either has the best defense in the NFL or is on a very short list. Bo Nix looked awful in Week 1, but he can get a pass for one bad game. If Daniel Jones looks good against the Broncos, we might need to have a conversation about the Colts being this season’s surprise team. I’m not anticipating that.”

Vic Tafur, The Athletic: Broncos cover the spread

“Peyton Manning Jr. was pressured on just 24.1% of his dropbacks last week, the third-lowest of his career. I think we mentioned how the Dolphins didn’t cover anybody. Now Jones faces arguably the best defense in the league. Good luck, Danny Dimes.”

Gennaro Filice, NFL.com: Broncos 31-19

“While these two teams both won last week, their respective paths to 1-0 couldn’t have been more different. Denver was an offseason darling, but the Broncos underwhelmed in the opener with a one-score win over the lowly Titans. Conversely, Indianapolis was an offseason punchline, but the Colts opened the new campaign in style, mollywhopping the Dolphins. Honestly, Indy’s 33-8 tour de force was one of the most surprising results of the season’s first Sunday. But that’s the thing about Week 1: It’s often a liar. And the truth comes out in Week 2. As someone who predicted in late August that Denver would end Kansas City’s eternal reign over the AFC West, I remain quite bullish on Sean Payton’s well-rounded club. Bo Nix’s September sloppiness was back last Sunday, but I don’t foresee the second-year pro stumbling through the entire opening month like he did as a rookie. Meanwhile, Denver’s defense actually did its job last week, keeping Tennessee out of the end zone while yielding just 133 total yards and two third-down conversions on 14 attempts. Do we really think Daniel Jones will get the best of this loaded unit? I know he was spectacular in his Colts debut, but again, Week 1 is a minefield of deceit. Sometimes the best thing to remember is that you need to forget.”

Sloan Piva, Sporting News: Broncos 23-17

“The Colts looked great against Miami last weekend, but the Dolphins also look like a dejected, aimless team right now. Denver, meanwhile, has one of the best defenses in the NFL and just held the Titans to 12 points and 133 total yards in Week 1.

“Daniel Jones will be seeing ghosts on the Lucas Oil Stadium field, trying to break free from pressure and chucking the ball into coverage. You don’t have to be a time-traveler to see this one going south quickly for Indy. The Colts reaching the 21-point threshold would be downright shocking.”

Sam Farmer, Los Angeles Times: Colts 27-23

“Bo Nix came back to earth with four turnovers, and Denver could be due for a letdown. The Colts’ run game and smothering defense carry them at home in a close one.”

Brent Sobleski, Bleacher Report: Colts cover the spread

“A step back or two should be expected. At the same time, the Broncos offense didn’t exactly click in its debut, either. With a more aggressive defense under the direction of Lou Anarumo, Denver quarterback Bo Nix could continue to struggle and give the Colts an advantage.”

Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Broncos 28-27

“The Colts are averaging 32.3 points in their past three home games, dating to last season, and blew out the Dolphins with a big performance from Daniel Jones. It was a modest start for Bo Nix and the Broncos offense after averaging 37 points in their previous four home games.”
