Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson had surgery earlier this week on the orbital fracture he suffered prior to the Arizona game, according to Ian Rapoport.
Richardson was placed on injured reserve the day after the Arizona game. Rapoport added that there’s a chance Richardson could return this season.
“Anthony Richardson had surgery to repair his orbital fracture, that was on Monday,” Rapoport said. “He is currently on IR. I’m told there is a chance he is back this season.”
Richardson suffered the injury during warm-ups when the pole that was attached to a stretch band snapped and impacted Richardson around his eye.
With Daniel Jones starting, Richardson had taken on the backup quarterback role this season. He had appeared in two games this season when the Colts were up by multiple scores late.
For the time being, rookie Riley Leonard will continue to be Jones’ backup — although that situation seems to be fluid.
After Richardson was placed on IR, the Colts signed Brett Rypien to the practice squad to provide another veteran presence in the quarterback room.
