LAFAYETTE — It was only a preliminary race, but Elijah Curry crossed the finish line, winning his 100-meter heat race while pumping his fist in the air.
The victory did nothing other than qualify Curry for the finals, but in retrospect, it set the tone for the night at Lafayette Jeff’s Scheumann Stadium.
Curry would back up his prelim run by winning the 100-meter finals, one of six individual victories for the Mavericks at the IHSAA boys track and field sectional Thursday, May 21.
More importantly, McCutcheon outscored runner-up Lafayette Jeff by 25.5 points in the team standings to win its first sectional title since 2017 and fourth in program history.
Leading the way was Kamarion Ayres, who won both hurdles races, claimed four individual wins, teaming with Curry, Jaymar Johnson and Easton Oakes to win the 400 relay and partnering with Kaiden Konkle, 800-meter individual champ Andrew Weinman and Johnson to close the meet with a first-place finish in the 1,600 relay.
