LAFAYETTE, IN — Lawrence Simpson III was sentenced to 18 years in prison Tuesday for shooting into a house in the 1800 block of Wilson Street, sending two adults and one 8-year-old running for cover on June 2, 2024.
The 8-year-old boy told police he heard the gunshots, so he ran with the two adults in the home to an upstairs room.
A jury convicted Simpson, 21, of the 1000 block of Julia Lane in Lafayette, of aggravated battery and possession of a machine gun. Other guilty verdicts from the jury were vacated at sentencing to avoid double jeopardy issues.
Simpson will have to serve 75% of his 18-year-sentence, or 13.5 years. He’ll then be on probation for two additional years.
However, Simpson has pending gun charges, including possession of a machine gun charge, as well as battery and recklessness charges for allegations of shooting into another residence in September 2024, as well as for stolen handgun and illegal possession of a handgun in January 2025.
