LAFAYETTE, IN — The most dangerous intersection in Lafayette is experiencing an increase in traffic enforcement in an effort to curb traffic accidents.
Lafayette police said in a news release Monday that the department has started a “targeted traffic safety project” in the area of South Street and Creasy Lane because of a high number of crashes and repeated traffic complaints.
Between Jan. 1, 2025, and June 16, 2026, LPD responded to 273 crashes in the area, the release said. The breakdown of that total equates to 202 property damage crashes, 39 crashes resulting in injuries and 32 hit-and-runs.
Since June 11, LPD officers have increased enforcement at the intersection, issuing 152 citations and making seven arrests in just less than two weeks. The focus has been on the root causes of previous crashes, including speeding, red-light violations, unsafe lane changes and following too closely.
The release did not indicate whether the project is ongoing.
Lafayette Police Chief Scott Galloway said in the release that the increase in enforcement isn’t just for the sake of enforcement.
“This is a response to a documented crash problem and repeated traffic complaints from our community,” Galloway said in the release. “The goal is to reduce crashes, prevent injuries and improve safety for everyone traveling through this area.”
LPD will continue to use crash data for additional monitoring of other intersections around Lafayette as a means to reduce crashes, address community concerns and improve traffic safety.
