Keldric Luster named starting quarterback for Ball State football

The next starting quarterback for Ball State football has been decided.

Keldric Luster has been named the Cardinals’ starting quarterback for the 2026 season and will take the team’s first offensive snaps in Week 1 at No. 1 Ohio State on Saturday, Sept. 5, according to sources close to the team. The fourth-year junior transfer from Texas State and SMU beat out Concord University (Division II) transfer Tyler Mizzell in the team’s quarterback competition.

The decision was announced by head coach Mike Uremovich to the quarterback room ahead of a team scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 21, according Star Press sources. Luster then played with the first-team throughout that scrimmage.

Luster began his college football career at SMU in 2023 and appeared in two games as a true freshman while earning his redshirt. He played in five games as a redshirt freshman in 2024 before transferring to Texas State, where he appeared in two games last season. His career stats are 4-of-12 passing for 37 yards and 16 rushes for 76 yards.

Before SMU, Luster was a 3-star quarterback recruit out of McKinney High School in McKinney, Texas. He had a connection with Ball State assistant secondary coach Mayomi Olootu, who was the defensive pass game coordinator at McKinney before coming to Muncie in 2024.
