INDIANAPOLIS — Colts quarterback Daniel Jones is expected to play against the Chiefs on Sunday despite dealing with a calf injury this week, according to Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen.
Jones popped up on the injury report on Thursday, the first time this season the veteran quarterback has been listed with an ailment of any kind.
Indianapolis listed Jones as limited on Thursday, but the team’s starting quarterback was able to practice in full on Friday, the last practice of the week before Sunday’s 1 p.m. kickoff against Kansas City.
“He felt some discomfort in practice,” Steichen said. “We thought it was a calf, we went back and reevaluated it, it’s actually a fibula. But he was a full participant in practice today, and he’ll be ready to go for Sunday.”
Jones took every snap in practice Friday.
“He was rolling, he was good today,” Steichen said. “Yesterday, he felt some discomfort, took a few reps off, and he went back and reevaluated it.”
Indianapolis declined to reveal the specific injury. Steichen typically does not break down the specifics of injuries if a player is able to stay on the field or plans to return that season.
“I’m not going to get into the specifics,” Steichen said. “But it’s a fibula, he’s good to go.”
From the sounds of it, the Colts are not concerned about the Jones injury being a problem long-term. Indianapolis does not plan to elevate No. 3 quarterback Brett Rypien from the practice squad this week, and Steichen’s unsure if it will be an injury Jones has to manage the rest of the season.
“I don’t know,” Steichen said. “We’ll see. He’s ready to go.”
