All five St. Joseph County public school districts saw increases in their IREAD scores this year, mirroring trends across the state as a whole.
The Indiana Department of Education released 2025-26 IREAD scores on Aug. 11, reporting that about 88.7% of students tested were proficient in reading, a step up from last year’s 87.3%. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Indiana saw improvement in IREAD scores.
So how did local public districts perform? Here’s what to know.
South Bend Community School Corp.
At SBCSC, 886 students took the IREAD in 2025-26, and 628 students passed, or roughly 70.9%. This is a slight increase from last year, when SBCSC’s passing rate was 70.8%.

School City of Mishawaka
At Mishawaka, 383 students took the exam, and 339, or around 88.5%, passed. This is a slight increase from last year, when 88.4% passed.

Penn-Harris-Madison School Corp.
At P-H-M, 817 students took the IREAD, and 774, or 94.7%, passed. This is an increase from last year, when the district’s passing rate was 93.7%.

New Prairie United School Corp.
At New Prairie, 210 students took the exam, and 199 passed, or 94.8%. This is a slight increase from last year, when 94.5% passed.

John Glenn School Corp.
At John Glenn, 134 students took IREAD in 2026, and 126, or 94.0%, passed. This is an increase from 2024-25, when 92.2% passed.
