Indiana braces for severe storms, possible tornadoes overnight March 26

While the temperature will continue to warm up, the National Weather Service expects severe weather to move through central and northern Indiana overnight on Thursday, March 26.

“Large hail and damaging wind gusts are the primary threats though a few tornadoes cannot be ruled out,” NWS Indianapolis said in their hazardous weather outlook. “Localized heavy rain is also possible.”

The central and northern parts of the state, from Indianapolis on up, will have a level 3 risk, which is a severe thunderstorm risk.

The midsection of the state including Terre Haute and Bloomington will be at a level 2 risk, while the southernmost part of the state will be at a level 1 risk.

The severe storms are expected to move through from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, March 27.

Hoosiers should keep a close eye on the weather and watch for weather alerts should conditions worsen.

The following Indiana counties are included in the hazardous weather outlook issued by NWS Indianapolis: Bartholomew, Boone, Brown, Carroll, Clay, Clinton, Daviess, Decatur, Delaware, Fountain, Greene, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Henry, Howard, Jackson, Jennings, Johnson, Knox, Lawrence, Madison, Marion, Martin, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Owen, Parke, Putnam, Randolph, Rush, Shelby, Sullivan, Tippecanoe, Tipton, Vermillion, Vigo and Warren.

Thursday, March 26: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8 a.m., then isolated showers and thunderstorms between 8 and 9 a.m. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 85. Southwest wind 10 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday night: Showers and thunderstorms before 11 p.m., then showers and possibly a thunderstorm between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m., then showers after 2 a.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 42. Southwest wind 9 to 15 mph becoming north northeast after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Friday, March 27: Showers, mainly before 8 a.m. Steady temperature around 46. North northeast wind 11 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Friday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 29. North northwest wind 8 to 13 mph becoming light after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.

Saturday, March 28: Sunny, with a high near 52. Calm wind becoming northwest around 6 mph in the afternoon.

Saturday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 38. South southeast wind around 6 mph.

Sunday, March 29: Partly sunny, with a high near 61. South southwest wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Sunday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 52. South wind 7 to 9 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Monday, March 30: A 30% chance of rain and thunderstorms, mainly before 2 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 72. Southwest wind 10 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.

Monday night: A chance of rain and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 60. South southwest wind around 9 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tuesday, March 31: A 50% chance of rain and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 76.

Tuesday night: A 50% chance of rain and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 63.

Wednesday, April 1: A 50% chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 78.
