Fishers at Brownsburg

BROWNSBURG 42, FISHERS 14 (read more)

BROWNSBURG – No scare for Class 6A No. 1 Brownsburg this week. Not even close.

The defending 6A state champions, after a scare last week in a win over rival Avon, jumped out early Friday night on seventh-ranked Fishers and cruised to a 42-14 win in a game that was played with a 35-point running clock from the midpoint of the third quarter.

Turning point: Fishers (3-2 overall, 2-1 Hoosier Crossroads Conference) actually kept Brownsburg (5-0, 3-0) out of the end zone on the first drive after the Bulldogs drove to the Fishers’ 5-yard-line. But the Tigers went three-and-out and Brownsburg scored on the next drive on a 10-yard pass from Oscar Frye to Branden Sharpe to cap an eight-play, 62-yard drive. The rout was on from there.

Player of the game: I’m giving it to Brady Lewis and A.J. Jobe, Brownsburg’s current two-headed monster at running back that will become three again when senior Shakovon Sumpterbey returns from injury, possibly as early as next week. Lewis ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries and A.J. Jobe had 84 yards and one TD on 17 carries. The offensive line was moving Fishers off the ball to where it felt like Brownsburg could get five yards when it wanted. The Bulldogs finished with 234 rushing yards and four rushing TDs.

Play of the game: There was not a lot of flash in this one but Oscar Frye’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Leo McQuillan in the third quarter was a well-designed play and nicely executed. Frye put it on the money to McQuillan who ran under it and put Brownsburg ahead 35-7 early in the third quarter.

NEW PALESTINE –  The top-ranked New Palestine Dragons aren’t in the business of overlooking anyone.

They’re a championship focused football program, and the Class 5A Dragons backed it up Friday night at Kelso Stadium in a battle of unbeatens against Hoosier Heritage Conference rival 4A No. 6 Pendleton Heights.

Senior quarterback Jacob Davis tallied 286 yards in total offense, passing for two touchdowns and rushing for another, while New Palestine’s Red Rage defense stymied the Arabians (4-1, 2-1 HHC) with a 42-6 victory.

The Dragons (5-0, 3-0 HHC) claimed their 19th consecutive victory, dating back to last year’s 4A state title run and 15-0 finish, and posted their third win by 35 points or more.

LAPEL 29, INDIAN CREEK 26 (read more)

LAPEL — In what may go down as the Boneyard Miracle, the Lapel Bulldogs erased a 12-point deficit against Indian Creek with less than three minutes left in the game.

Quarterback Devin Craig found Liam Ko for a 13-yard touchdown with 10 seconds remaining, lifting Lapel to a 29-26 victory.

Play of the Game: The play of the game has to be Craig’s connection with Ko for the winning score. Craig is a talented scrambler, but with the game on the line the senior made a play from the pocket. Craig received the snap from shotgun, took a four-step drop and released the ball as Ko made his cut on an out route. Craig’s pass landed right into Ko’s arms, allowing him to fall into the end zone for the score.

Turning Point: A game that started out as a defensive struggle turned into an offensive explosion in the fourth quarter. The teams scored four times in the final 4 minutes, 50 seconds of the game. Indian Creek took a one-score lead on a trick play to Hunter Worley. The Braves recovered the ensuing kick and scored again, taking a 26-14 lead with 1:30 remaining, The Bulldogs marched 70 yards in seven plays, scoring with 1:30 left. Then Lapel recovered an onside kick, setting up Craig’s winning touchdown pass.

Player of the Game: Devin Craig, QB

Craig scored three of Lapel’s four touchdowns. He threw two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and ran for one score in the third quarter.

CRISPUS ATTUCKS 62, PURDUE POLY 0 (read more)

Attucks defeated Purdue Poly 62-0 in a home victory on Friday. Attucks quarterback Corshawn Sartin had five touchdowns, including two rushing, and threw for 253 yards. The senior also had two interceptions.

Sartin spearheads the Tigers on and off the field. Though he called leadership “hard,” Sartin enjoys mentoring the freshmen because he regrets not taking his first year of high school seriously. Sartin believes it’s his responsibility to ensure the program “remains at a high level” and understands that starts with leading by example in areas like regularly attending class.

“He leads by action,” Tigers coach Anthony King said.

His father’s death forced him to.

But the Cubs roared back into the game, riding Cori Tonte’s career night that included five TDs and 230 rushing yards that cut the lead to 42-41 with 1:01 to play.
