The cost to prepare this year’s Thanksgiving dinner will be slightly less than in 2024, largely due to stores keeping turkey prices low, according to a farmers’ organization.
The American Farm Bureau Federation said the average cost of Thanksgiving staples that make for a classic holiday spread to feed 10 people will be $55.18, or about $5.52 per person. That’s 5% less than last year, the organization said.
It’s the third straight year of declines since the record-high cost of $64.05 in 2022, said the farmers and ranchers lobbying group. This is the 40th year for the dinner survey.
One of the reasons for the decrease in the average Thanksgiving dinner cost is the decline in turkey prices, the organization said. The average price for a 16-pound frozen turkey is $21.50, down more than 16% from 2024. The wholesale price for fresh turkey is actually up from 2024, but grocery stores are using lower retail prices to lure customers.
The costs of some other items, such as fresh vegetables and sweet potatoes, increased due to higher costs of labor and worker shortages, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation. Sweet potatoes are up 37%. A veggie tray will cost 61% more this year than in 2024.
This national average cost was calculated using surveys completed with prices from all 50 states and Puerto Rico.
Farm Bureau volunteer shoppers checked prices in person and online using grocery store apps and websites during the first week of November 2025.
A 2025 Wells Fargo Agri-Food Institute analysis also found that the Thanksgiving menu price has fallen, but by about 2% to 3%.
A dinner for 10 people using national name-brand items will cost $95, while an all private-label or store brand menu will cost $80, according to Wells Fargo.

Hoosiers might not see that decrease this year.
The average cost for the Thanksgiving Day feast will be $53.62, or $5.36 per person — an increase of 0.6%, or 3 cents per person, according to Indiana Farm Bureau.
Even with the increase, the average Indiana dinner will still cost about 3% less than the U.S. average price of $55.18.
Shoppers in Indiana can expect to pay about $1.32 per pound for a whole turkey, or $21.09 for a 16-pound bird.
