Herron Classical Schools President Janet McNeal told IndyStar a student saw another student had brought a gun to school early in the school day.

After that student alerted school officials to the gun, the student who possessed the gun was quickly removed from class, their mother was notified, and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police were called to investigate.

An alert sent to Herron High School families at 1 p.m. on Thursday said the investigation found that there was no “intended threat to anyone on campus.”

“I’m very sad to see this student make that choice, but it was all handled very quickly and efficiently, and no one was ever in danger,” McNeal told IndyStar.

IMPD told IndyStar that police were called to the school shortly after 11 a.m., after which the gun was found in the student’s backpack. The firearm was then secured as evidence, and the student was arrested for dangerous possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm on school grounds.

Herron High School has a clear backpack policy, where all students are required to use only a clear backpack or bag during the school day. McNeal later told IndyStar that the student carrying the gun did not have a clear bag.

The alert to families also pointed out that Indiana law requires any student who is found to have brought a gun to campus be expelled from the school for one calendar year.

Earlier in the week a gun was found in an Avon Elementary after a staff member was found to have “accidentally” brought a handgun to campus that day.
