HENDERSON, Ky. — A 20-year-old Henderson man has been charged with murder after police say he fatally shot his grandfather during a domestic dispute Wednesday morning on the city’s east side.
Officers arrested the man, identified in court records as Harold “JC” Farmer, shortly after the shooting. Farmer is being held in the Henderson County Detention Center.

The Henderson Police Department identified Farmer’s grandfather as 73-year-old James Culver. Culver was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting, a home in the 1100 block of Powell Street. Police were called to a reported disturbance at the home Wednesday morning around the same time neighbors reported hearing gunfire. Responding officers found Culver suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the chest, police said.
“Despite immediate lifesaving efforts by responding officers and EMTs, (Culver) was pronounced deceased,” a Henderson Police Department statement said.
Four other family members were inside the home when shots rang out, police said. They were taken to HPD headquarters and interviewed separately as investigators worked to determine what preceded the shooting. Detectives quickly identified Culver’s grandson as a suspect.
Authorities characterized the killing as a “domestic-related” incident, a term police said reflects the familial relationship and shared residence, not the nature of the dispute itself. A neighbor, Greg Thomas, told WEHT-ABC25 he had seen Farmer openly carrying a gun along Powell Street “a few times.”
The Henderson Police Department said it completed its initial round of interviews by late Wednesday afternoon. “The public is safe, and there is no danger related to this incident,” Sgt. Bill Russell said.
Farmer, who is being held without bond, was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at 10 a.m. in Henderson County Circuit Court.
Anyone with information related to the shooting is encouraged to contact the Henderson Police Department.
