Hamilton County Prosecutor Greg Garrison announces early retirement

Hamilton County Prosecutor Greg Garrison will step down from his role later this month over medical concerns, his office announced on Dec. 2.

“Serving this community has been the greatest honor of my career,” Garrison said in a news release.

Dec. 20, 2025, will be his last day in office. Josh Kocher, currently the chief deputy prosecutor, will take the helm as interim prosecutor. The Hamilton County Republican Party did not immediately respond to a request for comment about succession plans.

Garrison’s retirement marks the end of a long and storied career. After gaining national attention for prosecuting Mike Tyson’s rape case on behalf of Marion County in 1992, he headlined a conservative talk show on WIBC for two decades, signing off for the last time in 2017.

Garrison came out of retirement in 2022 to run a tough-on-crime campaign as Hamilton County’s prosecutor. After unseating three-term incumbent D. Lee Buckingham in the Republican primary, he won the November 2022 general election with 57% of the vote.

His run for office gained support from prominent members of the GOP, including former vice president and Indiana governor Mike Pence.

Garrison was hospitalized for a heart attack in 2023 but returned to work after recovering. More recent health concerns “make it imperative that I act with deliberate speed in wrapping up my work,” he wrote on Dec. 2 without elaborating on those health concerns.

The next election for the position is in 2026.
