What’s the difference between a flood watch and warning?

A flood watch occurs when conditions, such as excessive rainfall, are favorable for flooding. Residents should prepare for potential future actions, but a watch does not mean that flooding is happening.

A flood warning means the flooding danger is imminent or occurring. If a flood warning is put into place, immediately seek higher ground. Residents can stay up to date on conditions, such as if a warning is issued, by checking the National Weather Service website or following them on X @NWSIndianapolis.
