EVANSVILLE – An Evansville police officer was shot early Sunday morning while authorities reportedly attempted to recover a stolen vehicle.
Neither the officer nor the alleged shooter – who police shot while firing back – have been publicly identified. A news release issued by EPD spokesman Sgt. Anthony Aussieker didn’t detail the severity of their injuries.
Later on Sunday, however, EPD Chief Phil Smith made a post to the department’s Facebook page saying the officer was in “stable condition at this time.”
According to the release, authorities located the vehicle at the Rally’s in the 1200 block of East Virginia Street around 1:30 a.m.
“As officers approached the vehicle, two suspects immediately fled. While fleeing, one of the suspects pulled a firearm and shot at officers, striking one officer,” the release states. “Officers returned fire and struck the suspect.”
Both the EPD officer and the suspect who was shot were taken to the hospital. A second suspect, a juvenile, ran from the scene, according to the release.
EPD plans to hold a news conference Monday to provide more details. As of Monday morning, no time for that had been set.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
