Elkhart's Harris McMullen is The Tribune's high school Student of the Week for Feb. 3

Congratulations to Harris McMullen of Elkhart High School Freshman Division! He was voted by Tribune readers as the South Bend Tribune Student of the Week for Feb. 3.

Winner: Harris McMullen, Elkhart High School Freshman Division

Harris McMullen, Elkhart High School Freshman Division: Harris is an exceptional student and a kind-hearted individual. He is known for his friendly nature and is well-liked by everyone he meets. Harris consistently puts in the effort to achieve great grades, demonstrating his dedication to his studies. Beyond academics, he has a talent for singing and is an active member of the Karaoke Club, where his passion for music shines. His positive attitude and hard work make him a wonderful role model for his peers.

Nominee: Kerry Pontius, Mishawaka High School

Kerry Pontius, Mishawaka High School: Kerry is a kid who does everything from president of the gardening club to captain of the EVGP Team. He is a leader and works well with others. His peers respect him, and he is a hard worker.

Nominee: Joel Benavides, Penn High School

Joel Benavides, Penn High School: Joel’s passion to pursue engineering at Purdue was ignited through Digital Electronics and working on many STEM projects in high school. This year, he worked on the manufacturing side of an engineering project that beat out many university-level engineering competitors in a formal competition. He helped with ideation, brainstorming and learning a new way to mill the team’s design into reality. Earlier in high school, through collaboration with fellow Mission to Engineer/Penn STEM students and with the disability community, Joel helped make a Nintendo Switch more accessible through engineering a single joystick to control the Switch. Teachers describe Joel as kind, caring, well-rounded, impressive, humble, charismatic, inspiring, compassionate, empathetic, intellectual, and the list could go on and on.
