In the Indianapolis Colts’ joint practice with the New England Patriots, the team’s cornerback depth was tested.
With Charvarius Ward sidelined, several other players were tasked with stepping up in his place.
According to the Indy Star’s Joel Erickson, Mekhi Blackmon appeared to be the primary defender on “big plays” to AJ Brown and Mack Hollins. He was then responsible for a busted coverage on another play.
Cam Taylor-Britt, who Erickson acknowledged has had a good training camp, was “giving up plays” in the joint practice while playing both outside and nickel cornerback positions.
Jaylon Jones had “issues” as well.
A promising development was the play of Sauce Gardner, who “acquitted himself well against Brown.
Also in the secondary, Cam Bynum had an interception, while Erickson notes that Justin Walley and Jonathan Owens could have had two more.
