LAFAYETTE, IN — A 32-year-old Delphi man sped away from a Delphi police traffic stop Sunday night, leading police on a chase that ended in Tippecanoe County, where he is believed to have killed himself.
A Delphi police officer stopped Caleb Gibson near U.S. 421 and Carroll County Road 200 North for a traffic violation just before 9 p.m. Sunday, according to Indiana State Police. Gibson sped away from the traffic stop shortly after a police dog arrived.
Delphi officers chase Gibson on local roads, and Gibson eventually made his way onto the southbound lanes of the Hoosier Heartland Highway, according to state police. As he approached Lafayette, he ran over stop sticks, and his tires deflated.
Gibson drove his car into the roundabout at Schuyler Avenue and turned onto Old Indiana 25, where his car came to a stop just north of the roundabout, police said. Officers found Gibson dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Gibson was released from prison in January 2025 after serving a six-year sentence from White County for aggravated battery resulting in loss or impairment of bodily function, according to court records and DOC records. The charges stem from a New Year’s Eve 2020 incident.
A forensic pathologist will perform an autopsy Monday to help determine the cause and manner of death, Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello said.
