Comfy weather leads up to July 4, then maybe some rain and heat in the South Bend area

After that steamy heat spell, the South Bend area can expect a relatively dryer and cooler week as we head toward the Fourth of July holiday, according to the National Weather Service.

The Tribune’s reporting partner, WNDU, is forecasting highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s for most of the week.

Friday, July 4, could hit 90, but the humidity will likely be lower than we’ve seen recently, meteorologist Nathan Marsili said from the NWS office in North Webster, Ind.

There’s an “outside chance,” he said, that there might be rain early on July 4, but otherwise it’ll be dry.

More humidity could arrive July 4 and on Saturday, July 5. Saturday could be the hottest, with heat index briefly reaching 95 to 100 degrees, Marsili said.

Saturday also has a chance of a thunderstorm. If it’s earlier in the day, Marsili said, it could cool things off. If it’s later, there might be some heat building up to it.
