Colts roster breakdown: Who's a lock, on the bubble on special teams

With minicamp behind us, let’s break down the Indianapolis Colts’ roster through a different lens.

In this series, we will be going position-by-position and placing each player into one of three categories — are they a lock to make the team, likely to make the team, or on the bubble and fighting for a role?

What this exercise can do is help bring into focus how many roster spots are actually available this summer, along with highlighting who may be on the outside and looking in.

Rounding out our preview is the special teams unit.

Roster locks (2): Rigoberto Sanchez, Luke Rhodes

These are the only two players on the roster at their respective positions, and both continue to perform at high levels.

On the bubble (2): Spencer Shrader, Blake Grupe

Shrader and Grupe are competing for the Colts’ kicking job.

Shrader missed most of last season after sustaining an ACL injury. Before that point, he was 14-for-14 on extra points and 13-of-14 on field goals, which includes hitting a game-winner against Denver.

Grupe joined the team in Week 14 and was a perfect 10-for-10 on field goal attempts and 11-for-11 on extra points, according to PFF. The Colts then re-signed him earlier this offseason.

Grupe is the far more experienced kicker of the two, which could prove to be an advantage for him.
