The Indianapolis Colts’ Daniel Jones appeared twice in Dan Orlovsky’s ranking of NFL quarterbacks by traits.
Highlighting seven different quarterback traits — arm strength, ball placement, mechanics, decision-making, pocket presence, second-reaction creativity and rushing ability — Orlovsky ranked the top 10 quarterbacks in each category.
Jones first appeared in the mechanics section, coming in at No. 3, behind only Matthew Stafford and Joe Burrow.
Mechanics is, of course, a key component to delivering an accurate pass and also helps the quarterback operate within the timing and rhythm of the play. Last season, when healthy, Jones was quite good in both of those areas.
“You might be surprised to see Jones at No. 3,” Orlovsky wrote. “I was, too. But watching the tape again, I was taken aback by how good his mechanics were in Indianapolis last season. The Colts ran many different forms of RPOs, and that means his mechanics need to be sound. They were.”
Jones’ name then showed up in the pocket presence category, where he came in at No. 9.
Out of 44 eligible quarterbacks last season, Jones ranked 12th in pressure-to-sack rate, according to PFF, highlighting his ability to stay upright, even when things break down around him. He was also third in completion rate when under duress.
Although Jones wasn’t among the top 10 quarterbacks in rushing ability, he did get a shoutout from Orlovsky in this category.
