Indianapolis Colts’ cornerback Sauce Gardner offered some high praise for head coach Shane Steichen after Saturday’s training camp practice.
If you ask Gardner, Steichen is one of the top play callers in football.
“Just being able to go against coach Shane every day, that’s really who I’m going against and he a top-three play caller, Gardner said, via The Athletic’s James Boyd. “Obviously I spent time with different play callers with the Jets, I’ve played against a decent amount of play callers, but he’s top-three, easy. Just seeing it all come together, that’s making me better. Like any cheats I’m giving off, so they know, let’s run this against him, let’s run this against the defense.”
Gardner isn’t the only one who believes this either. As noted by Colts.com, CBS Sports has Steichen ranked as the 10th best play caller and The Athletic had him at No. 7.
Longtime film guru Greg Cosell also praised Steichen for his play-calling abilities this offseason as well.
“He just know how to dice a defense up,’ Gardner added. “Like ya’ll job, ya’ll going to be seeing Daniel doing X, Y, Z, Daniel doing this, but it’s Shane, he is driving the ship. His play calling be great and obviously, don’t get me wrong, Daniel he’s playing like a top five quarterback right now. There’s some throws that he’s made here, that I was like, bro, that’s a throw that I seen A-Rod make when I was in New York. It’s just great to see everything come together.”
Through 10 games last season, we saw the full effects of what the Steichen offense can be. Jones was among the most productive quarterbacks in football, while the offense was among the highest-scoring units during that first half of the season.
Even Steichen’s ability to shift the offense on the fly to adapt to having Phillip Rivers under center was impressive.
Gardner is confident that the Colts are positioned to win games this season, and Steichen leading the offense is one of the reasons why.
“So it’s great and we have everything that it takes to win here,” said Gardner.
