Braun declares disaster emergency across Indiana following severe storms

Gov. Mike Braun has declared a state of disaster emergency for 63 counties in Indiana following a bout of severe weather that swept through the Hoosier State on June 17, the governor’s office announced.

The state of disaster emergency is effective for 30 days and will allow the Indiana Department of Homeland Security to provide financial assistance to affected families with eligible expenses under the State Disaster Relief Fund program.

“Many Hoosier communities were impacted by the severe weather that swept through our state this week,” Braun said in a news release. “This emergency declaration ensures that every available state resource is mobilized quickly to support response efforts, help local governments address urgent needs, and help Hoosiers recover.”

Braun declared the state of disaster emergency after flooding, severe weather and tornadic activity tore through Indiana earlier in the week.

Where is the state of disaster emergency in effect?

Braun’s declaration is in effect in 63 counties across the state: Allen, Bartholomew, Benton, Boone, Brown, Carroll, Cass, Clay, Clinton, Dearborn, Decatur, Delaware, Elkhart, Franklin, Fountain, Fulton, Grant, Greene, Hamilton, Hancock, Harrison, Hendricks, Howard, Huntington, Jackson, Jasper, Jay, Jefferson, Jennings, Johnson, Kosciusko, Knox, LaGrange, Lake, LaPorte, Lawrence, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Miami, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Newton, Ohio, Owen, Parke, Porter, Putnam, Randolph, Ripley, Rush, Shelby, St. Joseph, Steuben, Switzerland, Tippecanoe, Wabash, Warren, White, Vanderburgh, Vermillion and Vigo.

How can Hoosiers receive assistance from the state?

To apply for individual assistance, Hoosiers can fill out an online form intended to help with immediate needs. Funds up to $25,000 are available for eligible individuals, though filling out the form does not guarantee applicants will receive funding.

Applicants will need to submit contact information, as well as basic information about their property, damage, insurance and financial expectations.
