EVANSVILLE — Boonville softball started its 2026 season in a less-than-ideal manner. The campaign started in Tennessee, where the Lady Pioneers went 2-3 over a two-day competition in Murfreesboro. And while they have gone 4-5 since, they leave their second Castle Softball Invitational appearance with their heads held high.
“We’ve really come together as a team,” senior shortstop Emily Parker said. “Great communication on the field which we didn’t have in Tennessee. We’ve grown a lot.”
Parker said the team is not only making strides with their relationship on the field, but through tournament experiences like Murfreesboro and Castle, they have grown closer off of it as well.
Boonville, 6-7 overall now, came into Deaconess Sports Park on April 10 placed in a 3-team pool with Avon and Bedford North Lawrence. The Lady Pioneers lost their opening game to Avon 9-1, who went 4-0 over the weekend, with the lone run scored by Ellie Tieman.
They bounced back in the next game with a dominant performance of their own against Bedford. Nevaeh Wall was stellar in the pitcher’s circle with 12 strikeouts, and Parker led the team in hitting, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
That momentum was carried into the following day for crossover play where teams would play outside of their pools. Boonville opened its day with a matchup against North that resulted in a shutout win, 4-0. Tieman had a productive game with three RBIs.
The Lady Pioneers were then matched up with Fishers, a team that entered Deaconess undefeated before losing to invitational hosts Castle on day one. Fishers were coming into the Boonville game hot after a 10-0 win over North Posey just before.
The script was flipped for the Lady Pioneers in their second game as Fishers won 4-0. But the competitiveness shown was admirable by Boonville as multiple batters got on base and connected well with the ball. Wall also had another strong performance, and the same can be said for Mia Clamme, who entered the game in the fifth inning and allowed zero hits from that point forward.
Lady Pioneers coach Kalyn Gore said her pitching duo is the best the Lady Pioneers have had in some time.
While doubt could have crept in for the Lady Pioneers against Fishers, they chose otherwise.
“It shows a lot of grit,” Parker said. “We could have just looked at (Fishers’) names and got down on ourselves but we didn’t.”
Gore shared a similar sentiment to Parker’s as she applauded the way her team competed in its final game at Deaconess. It’s an identity she and her coaching staff have been looking to instill in a young team relying on its upperclassmen, like Parker, for leadership. Gore said she has appreciated the way her experienced players have shown grit and set proper examples for the Lady Pioneers’ young talent.
Boonville has relied on the contributions of multiple freshmen like Wall this season. Gore said she is looking forward to seeing how the team will develop as the season progresses.
Gore and Parker are hoping to see the team’s hitting take steps forward to help out its pitching. Improvements were shown in spurts throughout the invitational in that regard for Boonville.
Gore and Parker both set the record straight that the Lady Pioneers are aiming to have a winning record this season. The pair also mentioned winning the sectional.
Sooner rather than later, Gore will have to lean on her coaching staff even more. She is pregnant and set to go on maternity leave.
Her staff have been supportive in multiple aspects like taking on more in-game responsibility and getting to know the players on a more personal level. It’s safe to say Gore trusts them to carry her aims for the team forward.
“Our coaching staff is well-experienced and here for every right reason,” Gore said. “We know what it takes to win a championship.”
Boonville achieved that feat in 2021 with a 1-0 walk-off win against Guerin Catholic in the IHSAA Class 3A state final. Five years removed from this triumph, with a young roster steadily growing, it is clear to see what Gore envisions for her Lady Pioneers.
