Big question facing Colts cornerback position heading into minicamp

Mandatory minicamp will take place for the Indianapolis Colts from June 9-11. This is often the last big milestone in the NFL offseason calendar before training camp arrives in late July.

Through the first two weeks of OTA practices, we’ve gained some valuable insights into where things stand on the depth chart, along with who may be standing out early on, but questions at each position group remain, and that’s normal at this time of the year. It won’t be until training camp and the preseason take place that playing time and final roster decisions are made.

So as part of our Colts’ minicamp preview, let’s highlight the one big question facing each position group. Next up are the cornerbacks.

How does the cornerback depth chart shake out for the Colts?

We know that leading the way at cornerback will be Sauce Gardner, Charvarius Ward, and Justin Walley, making up what should be an excellent position group for the Colts.

But how the depth chart shakes out behind this trio remains to be seen.

GM Chris Ballard has built out a unit that has strong depth, which will create a lot of competition. What we could see this summer is Cam Taylor-Britt, Mekhi Blackmon, Jaylon Jones, Johnathan Edwards, and Cameron Mitchell competing for two or three roster spots, which means two or three of these players will be on the outside looking in come roster cutdowns.

Taylor-Britt has experience playing in Lou Anarumo’s defense from their time together in Cincinnati. Blackmon played over 700 snaps last season, while Mitchell capitalized on his opportunities when they came his way, allowing a completion rate of just 50% when targeted.

Jones has experience but struggled to see playing time last season, while Edwards possesses upside as a young player, but refinement is needed.

Due to injuries, the depth of the Colts’ cornerback room was tested throughout the 2025 season. But now, this may be the strongest top-to-bottom position group on the roster.
