Carlos Gerardo Gonzalez-Hernandez was found unresponsive at the Adult Detention Center at around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday. On-site medical staff rendered aid until paramedics arrived. First aid continued until Gonzalez-Hernandez was declared dead at 3:12 a.m.

According to the Marion County Coroner’s Office, he died from acute renal failure and his manner of death was ruled natural.

Gonzalez-Hernandez’s death is being investigated by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the MCSO Internal Affairs Unit, the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency and the Marion County Coroner’s Office.

Gonzalez-Hernandez was booked into jail on March 26, according to court records. He faced charges including burglary, criminal trespass and battery after police said he broke into a business earlier that month.

The judge in the case had ordered a competency hearing weeks before Gonzalez-Hernandez’s death.

Israel Nunez Cruz, who was Gonzalez-Hernandez’s attorney at the time of his death, said his family wants to have a second autopsy performed.

Four men died at the Marion County Jail in 2024. Bailey Lyle, 27, and Richard Goode, 29, both died of accidental drug intoxication. Magic Dumes, 33, died of choking and Carlos Lagunes-Franchescy, 41, died of natural causes.
