Alec Pierce injury update: Will Colts' wide receiver play vs. Rams in Week 4?

Following Friday’s practice, Indianapolis Colts’ head coach Shane Steichen has ruled out wide receiver Alec Pierce for Sunday’s Week 4 game vs. the LA Rams.

Pierce remains in concussion protocol at this point after exiting the Colts’ Week 3 matchup against Tennessee, following a hard hit to the ground while going up for a downfield reception.

Pierce has caught 9-of-13 passes this season for 171 yards. Averaging a whopping 19.0 yards per reception, Pierce continues to provide this offense with a downfield presence.

However, we’ve also seen Pierce targeted more often at other levels of the field, an area of his game he wanted to expand upon this offseason.

Without Alec Pierce, who will start for the Colts at wide receiver?

Without Pierce, the Colts still have Michael Pittman, Josh Downs, and Tyler Warren to lean on in the passing game. But specifically filling in for Pierce will be AD Mitchell.

As the fourth receiver option for the Colts and in an offense that features the tight end position fairly heavily, there haven’t been a ton of options to come Mitchell’s way so far this season.

Through three games, he has four receptions for 41 yards. However, offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter expressed his confidence in Mitchell earlier this week.

“When AD’s number is called, AD is going to be ready for action,” Cooter said, via Rotoballer.

Mitchell is coming off a very strong showing during Colts’ training camp over the summer.
