More streets in Downtown Peoria will begin two-way traffic patterns as part of the city’s ongoing one-way to two-way conversion project.
Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. the portion of Adams Street between Walnut Street and North William Kumpf Boulevard will officially become a two-way traffic area, according to Peoria Public Works.
“Drivers should be aware of this significant traffic change and be alert for TWO-WAY TRAFFIC,” Peoria Public Works said in a news release. “Drivers should watch for oncoming traffic in both directions, watch for new pavement markings and signage, and allow extra time when traveling downtown.”
Left turns from the Bob Michel Bridge onto Adams Street will be permitted as will right turns onto Adams from Kumpf.
Northbound Adams Street from the Bob Michael Bridge to Kumpf Boulevard will continue as a one-way street until it is switched to a two-way thoroughfare in coming weeks, according to Peoria Public Works.
Peoria has been planning the one-way to two-way conversion of Adams Street and Jefferson Street for years as part of a multi-million project they hope will slow down traffic and keep people downtown.
Work on the $18.9 million project began in March 2024. The original timeline for completion of the project was summer of this year.
Adams Street and Jefferson Street were converted to one-way streets in 1951 in an effort to get traffic out of Downtown Peoria quicker. However, city officials hope the slowing of traffic will lead to people spending more time downtown while also making it easier to navigate.
