Returning from a five-game absence due to a stress fracture in his foot, Chicago Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze made one of the most significant and memorable catches on fourth down late in the fourth quarter in a 31-27 win over the Green Bay Packers.
Looking at their potential last chance in the wild-card matchup, quarterback Caleb Williams escaped pressure and, on the run, found Rome Odunze for a 27-yard gain, which led to a Bears touchdown and cut the deficit to three points.
The throw from Williams was praised across the league on Sunday, as well as the game broadcast by Kirk Herbstreit and Al Michaels on Amazon Prime. Not surprised by his quarterback’s playmaking ability, Odunze was asked if that was the best throw made by Williams in his career, and the second-year receiver said it would be, until the next one.
“I mean, the best throw until he makes the next best throw,” Odunze said. “You can say that every week with this dude, he’s a spectacular talent, super happy to be his teammate, and watch him thrive out there. Like he said, we’re not finished, we have more to accomplish, and I’m excited to keep going with No. 18.”
Coming in as not only draft class mates but first-round picks, the payoff for Williams and Odunze is already showing. Before his injury, Odunze was pacing himself to become the top target and producer for Chicago’s passing offense, but in his absence rookies Colston Loveland and Luther Burden emerged as serious threats. Williams continues to make big plays in the comeback victories for the Bears, and it’s no longer a surprise to those in the locker room.
