The Chicago Bears have been plagued by the injury bug through the first nine practices of training camp, and the latest blow happened when second-year wide receiver Luther Burden III exited Saturday’s practice with an injury.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Burden suffered a groin injury and is expected to miss a little bit of time. The timetable is unclear, but it’s certainly reassuring news that it was a significant injury, and the hope is he’ll be good to go for the Week 1 opener against the Carolina Panthers.
Burden was injured during a 1-on- 1 rep against cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, and that rep actually took out both players. While Stevenson fought through his injury, he was noticeably limping. But he did finish practice. Meanwhile, Burden walked off the field with a trainer after his injury.
Burden is coming off an impressive rookie season, where he totaled 47 catches on 60 targets for 652 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie, showcasing his impressive speed and playmaking ability. He’s garnered plenty of hype this offseason and is primed for an extended role in Year 2 following DJ Moore’s departure.
With Burden sidelined for a little bit, it should give other young receivers like second-year pro Jahdae Walker, rookie Zavion Thomas and Kaden Davis opportunities to make an impression.
