Illinois needs to hold elected officials accountable | Letter

Illinois taxpayers deserve an ethical and transparent state government. Unfortunately, they have not been getting it.

Democrats fail to change the culture that enables corruption. A series of recent scandals involving House Democrats demonstrate the need for reform.

State Rep. Carol Ammons was indicted in July on 10 federal corruption charges including wire fraud, lying to the FBI and conspiring to obstruct justice. Her House Democratic colleagues allow her to remain in office instead of demanding her resignation or voting to expel her.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Chris Welch is facing scrutiny over his lack of action in response to credible allegations of sexual harassment by then-State Rep. Harry Benton in 2023.

Ultimately, the inaction allowed the harassment of additional women over a three-year period as revealed in a report from the Legislative Inspector General.

The report raises serious questions about Welch’s leadership and handling of the Benton case.

The Speaker took no meaningful steps to support the young staffer who came forward. He ultimately acted only after a lobbyist brought forth new allegations. Had Speaker Welch done the right thing at the time, we would not be where we are today.

Illinois families deserve to know why the Speaker continues to fail victims of sexual harassment.

House Republicans have repeatedly introduced ethics reforms that House Democrats have refused to advance.

Specifically, we believe the Legislative Inspector General should have independent subpoena power to investigate misconduct without political interference. Illinois needs to hold its elected officials accountable without further delay.

Republican Joe Sosnowski serves on the Illinois House of Representatives representing the state’s 69th District, which includes parts of Winnebago, Boone, McHenry and Kane counties.
