Coming sushi spot takes step toward serving wine and beer in Peoria

A coming sushi spot received a warm reception when it went before Peoria’s Liquor Commission on Monday, Aug. 3.

Kanpai Ayce Sushi owner Kyle Zhuo went before the commission to request site approval for a Class G-B license at 714 W. Lake Ave. – which would allow the restaurant to serve beer and wine.

Zhuo, who also operates Holy Crab in East Peoria, told commissioners the concept will serve all-you-can eat sushi made to order.

“People like to have sushi with sake,” he said.

Expected hours are from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily, Zhuo said.

Previously home to Sweet Basil Café, the site has sat empty since 2024. Zhuo told commissioners he has made substantial progress in bringing the building up to code, with only a few things left to address.

The exact opening date is unknown, he said, as he is waiting on artwork from Japan and China to arrive.

Commissioners voted 4-0 to recommend approval. The Peoria City Council is scheduled to vote on the matter on Aug. 25.
