The Chicago Bears are fresh off an early bye week, which allowed head coach Ben Johnson and his staff to evaluate this team through the first quarter of the season ahead of Monday night’s showdown against the Washington Commanders.
The Bears offense has been highlighted by the duo of second-year stars Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze, who are making waves in the league, while the run game has been nonexistent and pre-snap penalties have been a detriment, and those remain concerns heading into the final 13-game stretch.
Returning to Halas Hall on Tuesday, Johnson shared his evaluation of the offense after the first four games, where he admitted that it’s “still a work in progress” and there’s plenty to clean up.
“Offensively, we’re still a work in progress,” Johnson said. “Some things we’re doing well, some things we’re not. The inconsistent nature with which we’re playing, we’re shooting ourselves in the foot quite a bit. And when I look at where we were through the first four weeks, [there have been] a lot of penalties … we were playing behind the sticks, and you can certainly feel that as I was calling [plays].”
But it hasn’t been all doom and gloom for the offense. They’re averaging 25.3 points per game (11th in the NFL) and have scored at least 21 points in every game so far this season for the first time since 2013. Johnson gave the offense credit, but he also understands the product on the field in the first four games isn’t sustainable going forward.
“I give the guys a lot of credit,” Johnson said. “I did feel like we were pretty good at getting back on track as much as we could. But it’s just not sustainable when you’re playing football that way and so that’s going to be an emphasis for us going forward. We’ve got to get the pre-snap penalties under control, and they know that.”
If the Bears can clean up the mistakes and finally find a way to get the rushing attack going, the sky’s the limit for an offense where Williams has already shown his capabilities in the passing game. Luckily, the upcoming slate has some favorable matchups that should allow them to get the ball rolling.
