Today is a very important one for several PGA Tour golfers hoping to crack the FedEx Cup playoff field in the regular-season finale at the Wyndham Championship. A rise up the leaderboard could mean a late entry into next week’s St. Jude Championship, while missing the cut could prematurely end their season.
Beau Hossler rocketed up the standings with a 9-under 61, two years after he set a personal record with a 60 at Sedgefield Country Club. Matti Schmid helped to secure his place in the top 70 with a 6-under 64 in the first round, while Davis Thompson and Denny McCarthy inched closer to the playoff field with 64s of their own.
Sahith Theegala is already safe, but his 8-under 62 was impressive nonetheless. Aldrich Potgieter, Keegan Bradley and Patrick Rodgers will have to pick up the pace if they want to play the weekend and improve their chances. And rookie sensation Jackson Koivun, who entered the tournament with the final playoff spot, will have to do better than 3 under in Round 2 to crash the party.
