The Marco Island Center for the Arts is inviting the community to experience the transformative power of creativity with “Beyond the Mirror,” a new creative wellness experience led by Melissa C. Phillips, MSW, registered clinical social work intern and founder of Gulf Coast Integrative Counseling.
Taking place from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20, this 90-minute workshop offers participants an opportunity to explore identity, resilience, and personal growth through the creation of a mixed-media self-portrait. Class size is intentionally limited to just 10 participants, creating a supportive and engaging environment for meaningful reflection.
No artistic experience is necessary — only curiosity and a willingness to create.
Throughout the workshop, participants will build a layered self-portrait that represents different aspects of who they are. Each element of the artwork carries symbolic meaning, including the background as the environment that shapes us, hair representing our thoughts and imagination, eyes reflecting how we see ourselves and the world, the mouth symbolizing our voice and self-expression, the heart representing what matters most, clothing illustrating the many roles we carry, a hidden layer revealing parts of ourselves others may never see, and a final layer envisioning the person we are becoming.
The workshop includes all art supplies, guided facilitation, and a welcoming atmosphere designed to encourage creativity, connection, and self-discovery. Participants will leave with both a completed piece of artwork and valuable personal insights.
“Art has a remarkable way of expressing what words often cannot,” said Phillips. “Whether someone is experiencing stress, grief, or anxiety, creating can reduce stress, build resilience, and foster self-discovery. You don’t have to be an artist to experience the healing power of art—just willing to begin.”
Phillips also expressed her appreciation for partnering with the Center for the Arts. “We are incredibly fortunate to have the Marco Island Center for the Arts in our community. It is more than a place to create — it is a place where creativity, connection, and well-being come together. Spaces like this remind us that art has the power to strengthen both individuals and our community.”
Phillips brings more than 25 years of experience helping individuals, families, and organizations thrive through a compassionate and creative approach to emotional wellness. As founder of Gulf Coast Integrative Counseling, she combines therapeutic insight with artistic expression to create meaningful experiences that nurture resilience, self-awareness, and connection.
