Woman arrested in Virginia in connection with Bay County shooting

SPRINGFIELD — A Panama City woman has been arrested Virginia in connection with a shooting that left one person in critical condition.

The Springfield Police Department announced in a release that Amy Brown, 43, of Panama City had been arrested in Alleghany County, Virginia. Her arrest stemmed from a warrant issued by the department for attempted first-degree homicide.

Police said in the release that Brown arrived unannounced at her ex-husband’s residence in the 2900 block of Avon Road on April 16. Authorities say an argument began at the front door, and that during the altercation, Brown produced a handgun and fired multiple times.

The man was struck on the left side of his head and his left hand. He drove himself and his daughter to the home of a family member and was taken to the hospital, according to the release.

Police said the man remains hospitalized but is in stable condition.

Authorities obtained an arrest warrant for Brown the same day, and investigators determined that she had fled the state. Their warrant was adopted by the U.S. Marshals Service.

Brown was found at a motel in Alleghany County on April 18 and was taken into custody by the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office.

The release from the Springfield police said additional charges are expected against Brown.

“The Springfield Police Department thanks the Panama City Police Department, Bay County Sheriff’s Office, Alleghany County, Virginia, Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Marshals Service for their assistance in the investigation,” the release said.

The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office posted a release to Facebook, where they say investigators pinged Brown’s cell phone to an area near the community of Low Moor, Virginia. Her vehicle was spotted in the parking lot of a Travelodge hotel.

Deputies confirmed with the hotel manager that she had checked in at 2:40 p.m.

The release from ACSO said deputies then called for a nearby hospital, a nursing home and a diner to be locked down. The hotel was also evacuated.

“A negotiator attempted to make contact with Brown but was unsuccessful,” the release said. “Further attempts by the negotiator led to Brown giving up without resistance.”

She was booked into the Alleghany Regional Jail on April 18, when ACSO said that she was being held until Florida authorities could interview her. As of April 20, Brown does not appear in the Bay County Jail’s public lookup tool.
