Who is Brian Harman? Former Open Championship winner making another charge at Claret Jug

The Open Championship is not quite halfway done, but there is a familiar name at the top of the leaderboard.

The man in the spotlight early is Brian Harman, who sits at 8 under through 36 holes.

Brian Harman PGA Tour history

Harman, 38, turned pro in 2009 and has four PGA Tour wins in his 16-year career. One of Harman’s wins is The Open Championship which he claimed in 2023. He won the 2025 Valero Texas Open this year and with his experience in the competition and early lead, Harman is on path to capture his second PGA Tour win of the season.

Harman is currently ranked 26 on the Official World Golf Rankings while also being 19 on the FedEx Cup standings. If results were to stay as is, Harman is projected to jump into the top 10 standings for the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Brian Harman nickname: The Butcher

Harman was given the nickname “The Butcher” by the UK media after his win at The Open in 2023. Newspapers called Harman “Butcher of Hoylake” after he stated he hunts animals a lot and he enjoys “butchering” them. Harman believes the media thought it would bother him, but he embraced it. Even his wife, Kelly Van Slyke, embraced it after she threw a party for him in celebration of winning The Open and made the party “butcher” themed.

Brian Harman: 2023 Open Championship winner

In the 2023 Open Championship, Harman won the tournament by six strokes over four competitors who tied for second. He finished the tournament 13 under par and had his best day in round two with 65 strokes or 6 under par. In Harman’s round two on Friday, he ended the day with 65 strokes or 6 under par. A coincidence that Harman surely would want to work in his favor.

Other notable accomplishments of Harman’s career is winning the 2014 John Deere Classic and the 2017 Wells Fargo Championship. He made over $42 million since joining the PGA Tour in 2012.

Brian Harman hometown: Pretty close to Florida

Harman is originally from Savannah, Georgia. He attended Savannah Christian Preparatory School where he made a name for himself in the golf scene. His skills got him recruited to numerous schools included his state school, University of Georgia. He and his family now live in St. Simons Island, Georgia, an city along the Atlantic Coast which is just 45 miles from the Florida-Georgia border.

Brian Harman: A Bulldog as an amateur

Harman attended the University of Georgia and joined their amateur golf team. In college, Harman was a three-time 2nd Team All-American. He won the 2005 NCAA Preview and the 2006 Isleworth Invitational.
