Social Security payments for Florida recipients are on a normal schedule in May, with the first payments arriving on May 13.
Social Security benefits, paid mostly to recipients who are older or retired, are typically scheduled to go out on Wednesdays based on the recipients’ birthdays. More than five million Floridians, or more than one in every five residents, received Social Security benefits in December 2025, according to the latest congressional report from the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Benefits from Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a program that helps people with limited or no income or resources, people aged 65 or older, and people who are blind or have a qualifying disability, are paid once a month.
Floridians who rely on Social Security and Supplemental Security Income build their monthly budgets around the day that money shows up in the bank. A missed or late payment makes it harder to cover rent, utilities, groceries, and medical bills, especially for retirees and people with disabilities living on fixed incomes.
Here’s what you need to know about this month’s Social Security payments.
How does the 2026 Social Security payment schedule work?
Social Security benefits are typically paid on Wednesdays, and most people receive their check on one of three Wednesdays each month based on their birth date. For May, that means:
People who started getting Social Security before May 1997 follow a different schedule and are paid on the 3rd of each month instead of a Wednesday‑based date.
How many people in Florida receive Social Security benefits?
As of December 2025, 5,294,001 people in Florida claimed Social Security benefits, including:
More than 4.4 million of the beneficiaries were aged 65 or older, the report said.
If I was born between the 1st and 10th, when do I get my Social Security check?
If your birthday falls from the 1st through the 10th of any month, your Social Security retirement benefit is scheduled for the second Wednesday of each month in 2026. That pattern applies all year, so once you know the second Wednesday date, you know when to expect your payment.
If I was born between the 11th and 20th, when do I get my Social Security check?
Beneficiaries whose birthdays fall between the 11th and 20th of the month are paid on the third Wednesday of each month in 2026.
If I was born on the 21st or later, when do I get my Social Security check?
If your birthday is on the 21st through the end of the month, you are in the final group and get paid on the fourth Wednesday of each month in 2026. This can require careful budgeting if your rent, mortgage, or other major expenses are due earlier in the month.
What do I do if I didn’t get my Social Security check?
If you didn’t get your electronic payment on the scheduled pay date, check your bank, the Social Security Administration said. They may be experiencing a delay in posting it to your account.
If you still need to report a late, missing, or stolen Social Security payment, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or contact your local Social Security office. The SSA will review the case, and if the payment is due, they will replace it.
