What flavor is the Mt. McDonaldland shake? Here’s what we know about the 'secret concoction'

If you were eating at McDonald’s or watching any of the fast food giant’s advertisements between 1971 and 2003, does the word “McDonaldland” ring a bell?

McDonald’s is bringing back its whimsical, fictional world and all of its beloved characters for a themed meal, complete with a “first-of-its-kind” souvenir and a mystery-flavored blue and pink milkshake named for the Mt. McDonaldland volcano.

“In the whimsical world of McDonaldland lives a colorful cast of characters who are legendary, timeless and cherished by McDonald’s fans across generations,” the company’s corporate website says.

“Now, for the first time in more than 20 years, Ronald McDonald, Grimace, Birdie, Hamburglar, Mayor McCheese and the Fry Friends are officially taking the trip out of the group chat.”

Here’s what we know about the Mt. McDonaldland milkshake flavor and when the McDonaldland meal will be available this month.

What flavor is the Mt. McDonaldland shake?

The new Mt. McDonaldland milkshake is a blue milkshake with pink whipped cream, “inspired by the vibrant blue ‘lava’ and pink clouds of Mt. McDonaldland.”

According to McDonald’s, it’s an ode to one of McDonaldland’s major landmarks and it offers a “secret concoction as enchanting as the world itself.”

Although the colors are reminiscent of cotton candy, it’s actually berry-flavored, a McDonald’s representative told TODAY.com.

“The Mt. McDonaldland Shake features McDonald’s signature soft serve and berry flavors and has a vibrant blue color with pink whipped cream — an ode to the ‘lava’ that erupts from Mt. McDonaldland and the clouds that sit at its peak,” the representative told TODAY.

What is the history of McDonaldland?

McDonaldland is a fantasyland that McDonald’s created in 1971 and heavily featured in its advertisements from the early ‘70s, through 2003.

In McDonaldland, you won’t just find the brand’s beloved characters, like Ronald McDonald himself, the Hamburglar and Grimace, but also whimsical landscapes full of apple pie trees, hamburger patches, and of course, the Mt. McDonaldland volcano.

“For over 20 years, McDonaldland was featured in everything from games to movies, and the characters developed a devoted fan following. Now the gang is back together, and fans can rediscover the epic world and its characters or experience it for the first time – all through the meal,” McDonald’s says.

This time around, McDonald’s is even partnering with Pacsun to release a line of McDonaldland merchandise, complete with T-shirts, sweat sets and accessories like bag charms and hair clips.
