The rivalry between Miami and Florida State heats up the most on the football field. It gets pretty spicy on the baseball diamond, as well. But tonight, the Hurricanes and Seminoles bring that energy to the basketball court in a shockingly important ACC showdown.
Miami has been a surprise contender near the top of the ACC standings all season. At 21-6 (10-4), Jai Lucas instantly rounded the Hurricanes back into their form from when they made the Final Four in 2023. But they hit their first rough patch of the season Jan. 20 when they fell at home to the Seminoles 65-63 on last-second free throws by Robert McCray V.
That win sparked a turnaround for FSU, playing under first-year coach Luke Loucks. The Seminoles won six of their next eight games after stunning UM, with a 70-65 win at Clemson on Feb. 21 getting them up to 14-13 (7-7) and gaining steam toward what would be a miracle March Madness bid considering their horrid start to conference play.

Miami’s four-game winning streak, which included a victory over North Carolina, ended Feb. 21 at No. 14 Virginia. Malik Reneau hit a nifty up-and-under layup to tie the game with less than 10 seconds left, but Tre Donaldson fouled Chance Mallory on a 3-pointer, proving the difference in an 86-83 loss. Reneau put up 16 points while Shelton Richardson led the Canes with 18 in their first meeting with FSU.
