The polls are open!
It’s time to vote for the Halifax Health Volusia-Flagler Girls Athlete of the Week for the week of April 27-May 2.
Last week, Father Lopez thrower Natalie Francis captured the honors, claiming 93% of the votes. The senior won the discus and javelin championships during the District 6-1A meet. She launched the discus 26.43 meters and the javelin 24.68 meters.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal gathers nominees for upcoming polls from across the area via email at cvinel@usatodayco.com. Please send a player’s name, school and notable statistics for a given week. Submissions are due no later than 8 a.m. every Monday.
To round out the ballot, our staff also picks athletes from scores and stats posted online or submitted by local coaches. Athletes for all in-season sports are eligible.
Voting in the online poll below will close at 10 a.m. Saturday. Votes are restricted to once per device per hour. Emailed votes will not count.
Flag football
Santana Dixon, Atlantic: The sophomore made program history with six interceptions in one game, including two pick-sixes, vs. Orangewood Christian.
Softball
Alyssa Checho, Seabreeze: The freshman pitched back-to-back shutouts against Pine Ridge and Bishop Moore to help the Sandcrabs to a district title.
Savannah Cox, Father Lopez: The junior went 4-for-5 with four RBIs in a win over Crescent City. She hit a double and a home run.
Track and field
Mikayla Palmer, Spruce Creek: The senior won the Region 1-4A high jump championship, clearing 1.72 meters.
Grace Taylor, Flagler Palm Coast: The junior placed second in the javelin event with a throw of 34.36 meters during the Region 1-4A meet.
