Tuesday, Aug. 18 is primary election day in Florida.
The Herald-Tribune will be covering the polls and elections results Tuesday.
Come back often to heraldtribune.com for live updates.
The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
To find out where to drop your ballot or where to vote in-person, check the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections website at sarasotavotes.gov.
Thousands have already cast ballots – either by mail or in early, in-person voting, which ended Saturday, Aug. 15.
If you haven’t mailed your Vote-by-Mail ballot yet: Don’t.
Instead, deliver it by hand.
The Florida Department of State says: “A returned voted ballot must be received, regardless of postmark, by the Supervisor of Elections’ office no later than 7 pm (local time) on Election Day.”
Here is a roundup of the Herald-Tribune Editorial Board’s endorsements for races on the Tuesday primary ballot.
You can also read our full Editorial Board endorsements for the Sarasota County Commission’s District 2 and District 4 Republican primaries, the Sarasota City Commission at-large race and the Sarasota County School Board’s District 1, District 4 and District 5 races.
Sarasota County School Board
District 1: Teresa DeWitt
District 4: Megan Tennimon
District 5: Beth Mayberry
Why we endorsed: DeWitt is a common-sense conservative who would bring that mindset to the board. Tennimon and Mayberry are knowledgeable former teachers who would lower the temperature on an often-divided School Board.
Sarasota County Commission
Republican Party primary District 2: Commissioner Mark Smith
Republican Party primary District 4: Commissioner Joe Neunder
Why we endorsed: Smith has been effective as an independent-minded commissioner who speaks up for citizens. Neunder has shown a willingness to evolve and adapt his positions as a commissioner, and that bodes well for his ability to get things done during a second term.
Sarasota City Commission at-large
Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch
Flo Entler
Why we endorsed: Ahearn-Koch has done a solid job during two terms on the city commissioner, and Entler is a passionate neighborhood activist who would focus on important quality of life issues. John Harshman, who has spent decades in Sarasota’s business community, is also a worthy candidate.
