In this week’s Swampcast, the Sun’s Kevin Brockway, Andrew Abadie and guest Cam Parker of SI.com Florida discuss the start of fall camp and the Florida football quarterback competition.
Brockway said that Tramell Jones Jr. has shown good accuracy and arm strength in fall camp as he competes with Aaron Philo, a Georgia Tech transfer who has more familiarity with the offense. The Florida Gators open the season Sept. 5 at the Swamp against Florida Atlantic (7:45 p.m. SEC Network).
“Philo still has that slight edge of maybe being ahead on the offense but he certainly has to pick it up,” Brockway said.
Abadie said that Jones has been more consistent during open viewing practice periods, but doesn’t expect a true decision to come until Week 3 of the season at Auburn.
“It’s not going to be decided by one or two scrimmages,” Abadie said. “Jon Sumrall basically said that, But I so think Tramell has won the fanbase.”
Later in the podcast, Brockway, Abadie and Parker broke down other areas of concern for Florida, including on the offensive line and in the secondary.
“I think it’s really intesting they are trying to figure out that safety and star position, too,” Parker said. “I know Kanye Clark has had a good time being on campus, but they are still working Bryce Thornton up there, they are still working DJ Coleman up there. They are also working them in the back end.”
