I was appalled by the remarks made by U.S. Rep. Greg Steube – my congressman – during the Robarts Arena memorial tribute for the recently slain Charlie Kirk.
It’s shocking that any elected official would speak in such a manner about a portion of his constituents.
According to the Oct, 21 Herald-Tribune article, Steube said there were “forces of darkness” in America – forces he identified as Democrats, communists, secularists and those who sought to “replace the cross with the rainbow flag.”
Steube also said there is a “demonic assault on the very soul of the United States” and that “the left wants to slit the throat of our freedom.”
Steube used these code words in his remarks to invoke an apocalyptic vision of our country.
I guess he did not see the news regarding the 8 million marchers who took part in “No Kings” protests across the country.
Some of them wore blow-up costumes while others were blowing bubbles and carrying balloons.
All of them were peaceful, and they were all apparently happy to be demonstrating as our U.S. Constitution allows.
Those of us who worked for equal rights for all during the 1960s and 1970s were also called “communists.”
Jesus said we should love our neighbor, but Steube’s words were not very Christian.
