The South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team fell to UConn on Sunday in the national championship, 82-59, at Amalie Arena in Tampa.
The Gamecocks fell short of winning back-to-back national titles under longtime head coach Dawn Staley.
UConn won its 12th national championship in program history, all of which have been under head coach Geno Auriemma.
South Carolina boasted one player from the state of Florida, Chloe Kitts, who hails from Oviedo. Kitts was part of the 2024 national championship squad with South Carolina, and was the 11th player who played high school basketball in the Sunshine State to win on the biggest stage.

Kitts played a solid amount in the Gamecocks’ loss on Sunday, but, as a whole, South Carolina struggled in the scoring department. Kitts tallied nine points with six rebounds and an assist.
Only teammates Tessa Johnson and Joyce Edwards scored more for South Carolina, potting 10 points apiece.
Entering Sunday’s National Championship, Kitts was averaging 10.2 points per game with a team-high 287 total rebounds and 72 assists.
Kitts played high school ball at The Master’s Academy in Oviedo before transferring to DME Academy in Daytona Beach.
