Planned roundabout will have commuters driving around major intersection

Drivers traveling through the Golden Triangle area of Mount Dora, south of Eustis, will encounter a significant traffic pattern change later this month as construction continues on Lake County’s Eudora Road roundabout project.

When do the detours take effect?

Beginning Monday, Aug. 31, northbound and southbound access to the intersection of Eudora Road and Old Highway 441 (County Road 19A) will be closed while crews advance work on the new roundabout, according to a Mount Dora news release.

The closure is part of a larger Lake County effort aimed at improving safety and traffic flow at one of the area’s busiest and most complex intersections.

During the closure, motorists will be directed to use Bay Road, Lake Center Drive and U.S. 441 to access County Road 19A, Eudora Road and Triangle Elementary School. Drivers should follow posted detour signs and expect additional travel time through the area.

Also, Magical Meat Boutique, a popular British pub, recently relocated nearby. Because the pub is situated on Old Highway 441 just west of the Eudora Road intersection, the upcoming roundabout construction will affect how some customers reach it.

By taking detour roads, drivers can safely loop around the closed intersection and reconnect with the western stretch of Old Highway 441, bringing them right to Magical Meat Boutique’s front door.

County officials have indicated that additional traffic pattern changes are expected as construction progresses, with work on the project continuing into 2027.

‘Downtown Mount Dora will remain accessible’

Despite the roadway changes, officials emphasized that downtown Mount Dora will remain open and accessible, with multiple routes available for visitors, residents and businesses.

The roundabout project is part of broader transportation improvements planned for the western gateway into Mount Dora, an area known locally as the Golden Triangle, where Mount Dora, Tavares and Eustis converge.

The intersection of Old Highway 441, County Road 19A and Eudora Road has long been cited as a problem area because of its unusual layout and increasing traffic volumes.

‘Dozens’ of crashes in the area

Lake County studies found dozens of crashes at or near the intersection over the past five years, prompting officials to pursue construction of a single-lane roundabout designed to improve safety, reduce conflict points and increase traffic capacity. The project is valued at more than $8 million and is being funded through a combination of county, city and grant dollars.

The overall improvement effort also includes nearby signal and roadway upgrades intended to accommodate continued growth in the Mount Dora area and improve connections between surrounding communities.
