Parent company of Venice-based PGT plans closure of two plants on Florida's east coast

A “strategic realignment” of  Florida operations by the parent company of PGT Innovations means closure of window and door manufacturing plants in South Florida’s Medley and Hialeah, with some of the work shifting to PGT facilities in Venice and Fort Myers.

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania-based MITER Brands, announced the changes Sept. 2.

The Medley plant is projected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025 and the Hialeah plant in the first quarter of 2026.

MITER is also slated to open a new, advanced glass manufacturing plant in Pembroke Plnes.

As part of the transition, MITER is discontinuing two product lines and relocating other high-demand products to other Florida facilities, including Venice and Fort Myers.

The changes reflect the company adapting to the market and evolving industry trends.

“By retiring certain product lines, our team is able to concentrate our resources on the products and technologies that offer the greatest value to our partners,” Brian Covey, VP of Sales for MITER Brands, said in a prepared statement.. “With this focus, we’ve made substantial investments in nearby facilities to ensure we maintain the highest quality standards, while continuing to deliver the exceptional value our customers expect.”

How will this affect PGT Innovations in Venice?

MITER has set up internal job fairs to see their best fit within the company as well help employees with outplacement for other manufacturing jobs.

The process is similar to what occurred locally after MITER announced layoffs in Venice and other facilities in November 2024 and January 2025 because of changing market conditions.

MITER Brands spokeswoman Stephanie Cz said via email that employees in Hialeah and Medley will first be offered opportunities to relocate to Venice and Fort Myers to retain their jobs.

“As we  anticipate additional openings on these production lines, this will also allow us to engage with the Venice and Fort Myers communities for candidates, fostering local employment growth,” she added.

The private company purchased PGT Innovations – which was founded in Venice by Rod Hershberger in 1980 – for $3.1 billion, with the deal closing in March 2023.

The Pembroke Pines glass plant is expected to open in 2026.

“With our long-standing presence and collaboration on building code development in Florida through our PGT brand, we have a deep understanding of the region’s design trends, code requirements, and ideal products for single-family and multi-family applications,” Dean Ruark, SVP of Engineering and Product Development for MITER Brands, said in a prepared statement.  “This new plant will enhance our ability to provide high-quality, impact-resistant solutions tailored to local needs.”
