Old Landmark Skate Center building could be revived as hockey rink

An iconic West Pensacola landmark could once again become a popular spot to skate with friends, family or competitors – only now on ice.

William Sealey Architects filed conceptual design plans with Escambia County in August to possibly develop a hockey rink at 1002 N. Navy Blvd by restoring and upgrading the former Landmark Skate Center.

Developers want to rehabilitate a portion of the vacant building, which was damaged by fire in late 2019, and expand on the structure to include amenities like team sections for competing groups. They also plan to create a parking lot for the facility that will be accessible from Navy Boulevard.

The project isn’t guaranteed and it’s still in the early planning stages at this time, according to Sealey, but developers filed the conceptual plans in August to meet with county officials and answer some initial questions.

What will the hockey rink look like?

The conceptual plans indicate that developers want to create a pair of party rooms and restrooms, a concessions area, an office and a skate rental/pro shop on the eastern end of the first floor, while they plan to create four areas for competitors, a storage area and additional restrooms on the opposite side of the rink.

The skating area will be in the middle of the building and it’ll feature scorekeeper, player and penalty boxes on the south end.

At this stage of the project, plans for the second floor are to create additional seating, bathrooms and a training room.

What’ll happen to the Landmark Skate Center building?

The old home of Landmark Skate Center could be reinvigorated under the potential project, as developers plan to expand on the building while restoring its damaged parts.

Developers plan to rebuild a portion of the eastern side of the building to its original dimensions and construct a 4,568-square-foot addition on the western side.

The building will be expanded from 22,558 square feet to 27,162 square feet under this version of the potential project.

Developers calculate that about 16.8% of the project will be new construction.
