Nokomis woman fatally struck by SUV while crossing road on bicycle, troopers say

Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a Nokomis crash that killed a bicycling 45-year-old woman June 13. 

A 2017 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling southbound on U.S. 41 while occupying the inside travel lane at 9:51 p.m. The SUV collided with the bicyclist, who troopers say was improperly crossing the roadway near Pavonia Road.

The woman, who is from Nokomis, was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with critical injuries. Troopers listed her injuries as fatal in a crash report. The driver, a 66-year-old man from Minneapolis, is cooperating with troopers. 

As of June 12, there have been 2,916 crashes in Sarasota County. Of those, there have been 16 deaths and 1,903 crashes, according to the Florida Crash Dashboard. There have been 2,627 crashes in Manatee County. Of those, there have been 21 deaths and 1,865 injuries.

The Florida Highway Patrol will continue to investigate this crash.
